OBITUARY

Sr Mary Prianthie of the Eucharist

Institute No 1445

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge will award to me on that day (2 Tim 4:7-8). These words of St. Paul summarize the life of our dear Sister Priyanthi.

Sister Mary Priyanthi of the Eucharist nee Nathalia Mareen Mercedes Pinto born on 26 December 1944 into a loving family, and was brought up with much love and care by her parents late Salvadore Pinto and late Clara Suaresat Valencia. She is second among two children. She was very fond of her onlybrother late Manny Pinto and late Sister-in-law Lyntte Pinto. She was loving aunt to her nephews Loy, Joy and niece May who with their regular visits gave her much joy.  Her father worked hard in Jadpur in order to support the family and eventually died there in 1944.This was a major blow to the family. Sr Priyanthi never saw her father neither experienced her father’s love but her mother with the support of her uncle brought up these two children with a good Catholic education. Sr. Priyanthi studied at St Agnes School and College uptill her PUC after which she joined St Ann’s Teacher Training Institute, Mangalore. It was there that she felt called by God to the ApostolicCarmel way of life being inspired by the sisters. She joined Postulancy on 20 May1964 and made her first commitment on 26April 1967.

Sr. Priyanthi was very simple and humble yet a very jovial person who entertained sisters at recreations with her witty jokes and puzzles. She had a melodious voice, was adept at the violin and sang powerfully during liturgy. She was known for her intercessory prayers and the sisters of the community relied on her prayers and intercession. She was the first one to read the daily newspapers, weekly Rakno and the other periodicals. She was very interested in the apostolate of the campus institutions and enquired about the happenings to take them to the Lord. She was well known for her culinary skills and was very much famous for preparing various types of chutneys.

The Lord accompanied her to various places during her life time in the Apostolic Carmel and entrusted her with different assignments. She served at the Family Guidance Centre at Bishop’s House, Mangalore, Presentation Convent, Mangalore, Carmel Convent Haliyal, Stella Maris Convent, Kotekar, Lourdes Convent, Kalyanpur, Carmel Convent Pezar, Yesu Prem Niketan, Mangalore. She has served Carmel Convent Haliyal and Lourdes Convent of Kalyanpur as the animator of the community. She has also served the communities in the capacity of sacristan, minister, choir mistress, diarist, boarders’ mistress and community secretary. In 2017, she was transferred to St Agnes Convent. Plagued by different illnesses like diabetes, Pressure and vertigo, life in retirement was spent in helping in the kitchen and in the company of our Lord praying for the different needs of the community, family members and the world at large.

Life took a sudden change to her when it was discovered that she was suffering from cancer in the month of August 2023. Further she was taken to the doctors who treated her with best medical help to which she responded positively. We are grateful to the doctors Christopher Pais, Erol Dias, M. Roshan, and Denish for their timely help. On October 4th she took a bad turn and she was shifted to Colaco hospital and was kept in ICU. When she recovered she was shifted to the ward. After a week doctor advised her to give palliative care at home. In the Convent she was given good care day and night by Sisters Vinitha and Reema the nurses of the community and a home nurse. On Saturday October 21st afternoon she had hard breathing and all the sisters including our retreat preacher Sister Susheela, the former Superior General rushed to her room and prayed for her. The Asst. Parish Priest Fr Lawrence Continuo anointed her with last sacrament. That night Sr. Agatha Mary, our infirmarian kept vigil, the whole night praying and assisting her with her needs. On October 22nd she spoke a few words to some of the sisters who visited her and in the evening in the presence of her Nephew, Niece and their families, with Sr Maria Roopa the superior and a few sisters of the community winged her flight to God peacefully at 6 p.m.Sr. Maria Shamita, our Provincial Superior was informed and she came in immediately and assisted us to make preparations for the last rights. We are grateful to her and Sr. Marina D’Cunhna for their help. We also keep on record the assistance given by Colaco hospital, the doctors and the nurses.

On October 23rd the mortal remains of our dear Sr. Priyanthi were laid in the convent chapel at 1 p.m. The sisters of the community, her relations, sisters from the local communities, the ACA’s, hostellers and the parishioners prayed constantly for our sister. The funeral rites commenced at 3.30 p.m. Rev. Fr. Ronald Serrao was the main celebrant together with six other priests concelebrated the mass. With great love some of her students from Haliyal and Pezar came for the funeral. After Mass funeral rites were celebrated and she was laid to rest in the Convent Cemetery.

Dear Sister Prianthie, we love and cherish the beautiful memories of your dedicated and committed life spent in our community. Adieu dear Sister, Adieu till we meet you in that heavenly abode.  Now that you enjoy eternal bliss, do intercede for your family members and the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation. Do pray to the Lord to give us good vocations so that His mission may be continued here on earth.

A tribute of love and gratitude from the sisters of St Agnes Convent, Mangaluru.
