St Cecily’s High School, Udupi

Affluent convent educated mothers in Udupi desired for similar education for their daughters. So was the desire of some Catholic landlords and merchants of the city. Desire is the mother of the inventions. So came up St. Cecily’s School on May 21st 1918 with 3 classes and 9 students on roll. The strength gradually rose in the subsequent years. Mr. M. P. Alva one of the elites of the city approached the Governor of Madras to obtain a Teaching Grant and Building Grant. The Bishop Most Rev. Paul Perini SJ donated a plot for a new building in 1922 and the Government gave the plot adjacent to it as playground for the school.

Facilities and amenities for the development of this school improved with the ardent love of the local people. As the strength grew, the school was bifurcated into Primary and High Schools. Thus a full pledged High School was started in 1933. St. Cecily’s High School presented its first batch of SSLC in March 1934 for the Public Examinations. The old High School block was built in 1937.

The contentment of the locals with the standard of education provided here was evident as the strength of the school swelled in multitude. The school achieved many accolades in the passing years. In 1946 Kannada was adopted as the Medium of Instruction. However many parents desired their children to be educated in the English Medium. Complying with their requests, the English Medium Primary school was started in 1959 and in 1969 the Kannada Medium High School was merged with the English Medium as a parallel section. The PTA was founded in 1962. St. Cecily’s High School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1984 and to mark this occasion the Library block was put up. In 2012 the Platinum Jubilee of the First Batch of SSLC moving out was celebrated and as a mark of remembrance a new spacious hall with 8 classrooms and a laboratory was put up. With the daughters being groomed well, the parents wished that their sons also derive the benefit of good education from St. Cecily’s. Thus admission of boys to the High School commenced from 2012-13.Hence at present St. Cecily’s High School shines as the beacon light of education for girls and boys as well.
