Carmel Girls’ High School, Modankap, Bantwal (1963)
Carmel Convent Girls High School, Modankap, Bantwal Modankap is situated in the outskirts of Mangalore and hence the need to provide a High School for girls of the parish and of the locality, since the parish had only a Higher Primary School for girls and boys and the girls had to go to a Hindu school in pursuit of High School studies. Besides, many girls used to go to Bombay seeking jobs; they faced moral danger while working as servants in houses. Hence at the request of the then parish priest Father Edwin Castelino of the Infant Jesus Church, Bantwal, the school was started on June 1st, 1963. There were 40 students on roll. The children were poor but simple and good. The new building of the school was constructed and blessed in July 1963 and the number rose to 53. From the first batch of students five young girls joined the Apostolic Carmel and what was surprising was that one of them, Sr. M.Linette A.C. was the Provincial Superior of the Karnataka Province and was the President of the Function when the school celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2013. The Ex-students Association was formed in 1985 and is very active till today. They contributed a great deal towards the celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of the School. From 2002 onwards the students of the High School have brought laurels by securing first place in the Science Exhibition at the National level. They have also competed in the Science Exhibition at the South India Zonal Level and all through the past 16 years at the State Level Science Model Exhibition securing a place which is praiseworthy. The school has been a nursery of vocations to both the Apostolic Carmel and other Congregations. Over the years it has grown from strength to strength in academic excellence and caliber.
