OBITUARY

SR MARY REGIA OF THE CROSS

INSTITUTE NO. 1441

“May the Vision of your beauty be the death, for the sickness of love is not cured except by your presence and image.” St John of the cross.

“O God my God for you my soul is thirsting, my body pines for you.” Ps 61:2

This was her plea to her Beloved while she was battling for life. The Lord had a special mission for our dear Sr Regia. He chose her to partake in His Cross of pain and suffering for over 10 years. Uniting her suffering with that of Christ Crucified she offered her pain for the needs of the church, the congregation and the entire world. Great was her surrender to the will of God even in the moments of utter helplessness, deprivation and loneliness. A long life of almost 80 years, with 57 years as a religious was spent in total commitment to God and His people in love and service. Every person who came in touch with her experienced her tender love and compassion. Her loving heart embraced everyone and made them feel loved and accepted.

August 27th 1944 was a joyful day of Camil Lasrado and Mary Fernandes to have their 5th child among 9 children in their residence at Kundapur, her siblings the Lt. Lucy Lasrado, Lt. Pascal Lasrado, Lt.Benna Lasrado, Pauline Colaco, Milly Nazareth, Lt. Juliana Lasrado and Lina Lobo, wife of Deacon Sylvester Lobo. She was baptized on 4th September 1944 at Holy Rosary Church, Kundapura, and named Carmine. This tiny babe grew up in a happy and peace loving environment of the Lasrado family. Sr.Regia did her schooling at St Joseph, Kundapur. She completed T C H, at St Ann’s Teacher’s  Training Institute, Mangalore in 1964. It was here that she was attracted to religious life and joined the Apostolic Carmel Congregation on 24th May 1964. She committed herself to the Lord when she made her First profession on 26th April 1967.Then onwards she began her active apostolate of teaching in the Primary school at Ladyhill. Being alert, active and studious she was sent for higher studies. She did her B.A. at Maharani’s College, Bangalore in 1972, MA in Kannada at PG Centre at Konaje in 1975, and secured the first rank. She obtained a scholarship for Higher Education and  5 gold medals. As a lecturer in St Agnes College she taught Kannada. Well versed in her subject she could spent hours in sharing her knowledge with her students. She taught as a lecturer at St Agnes College for 25 years. When St Agnes College was bifurcated as PU and UG she was appointed as the first Principal of PU College till she retired in 2002. After that she was part time Kannada lecturer in St Mary’s P U College, Marjil, till 2010 and then was transferred to Annunciation  Convent, Ladyhill. She engaged herself in helping the needy and deserving students by giving monetary help and also coaching them.

Sr Regia had a big share in the suffering of Christ. She was asthmatic with constant cold, headache, cough, heart congestion and hypertension from 1999. In 2007 she had  a compound fracture of the left leg and ankle. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and was operated upon. She suffered intensely during these last years of her earthly pilgrimage, enduring everything silently, patiently   without complaining. On her bed of suffering, she thought of others – contacting those who needed help and counseling them. She was a good listener and was compassionate and human in her dealings with her students. Her life of consecration to God in the religious life has borne abundant fruit. The fruit of her happy life was her authentic living and of the experience of the A. C. Charism “God Alone Suffices.” Her life of prayer and union with God enabled her to radiate God’s light and fragrance all around. She has been a loving companion, a ready councilor and devoted friend to everyone -the sisters, students, workers, parents and even strangers.

Sr Regia had deep love for her family members and often recalled the happy moments she spent with them. They in turn visited her several times bringing joy and comfort to her in her helplessness; she knew everyone by name and prayed for them. Sr Shamita, our Provincial Superior often paid her comforting visits. Several sisters especially those who lived with her, students and friends  visited her and gave her joy and consolation. The superior and the sisters visited her daily and some sisters prayed with her the Rosary and the Evening Prayer.

On  25th Dec 2023 Sr Regia took a sudden turn and was very sick she was admitted at Father’s Muller Hospital in I C U nearly for 10 days. From then onwards her movements were slow.

On 12th June 2024 as Sr Regia’s condition was low the superior called Fr Benjamin Pinto our Parish Priest, who anointed and administered the last Sacraments to our sister.

On 13th  June Sr Regia took a bad turn ,the Superior  admitted her to Fr Muller Hospital, after a week the Doctor advised us to take her back home as she was not responding to the medical treatment given. Accordingly she was given  palliative care at home. Mrs Mary D’Souza was with her taking care of her every need and the sisters were with her round the clock to see to her needs. On the 28th morning her niece-in-law, Mrs Muriel came to visit her, in the presence of the superior and community and her niece-in-law, our sister, peacefully winged her flight to heaven amidst singing of hymns and prayers.  at 9.05 am. The Doctor was called to certify her death. Immediately messages were sent to the Superior General, Provincial Superior, her sisters and family members. Hearing of her demise  Srs. Shamita, our Provincial Superior and Sr  Sudeepa came to pay their last respects to her mortal remains after which she was shifted to the mortuary at Father Muller, Kankanady.

We are grateful to the doctors, nurses, caretakers, in particular Mercy, who was constantly with her in the hospital, and her frequent visits to the convent to attend on her, our domestic helpers specially Mrs Mary D’souza who rendered her help for more than 9 years and Sr Violet Tauro, our Superior ,Srs. Pushpa Pinto and Magdaline, our Infirmarians who, day and night, took immense care of her in her suffering and Sr.Merici  who was seeing  to her needs at night.

Dear Sr.Regia, you set an example, for us, of how to face suffering and make life beautiful. May God bless us all to live our life to the full. We now have an additional intercessor in heaven. Dear Sister Regia, intercede for us.

A tribute of love and gratitude from the Superior and the Community of Annunciation Convent , Ladyhill.
