Mary sings the mercy of God which echoes, reaching from generation to generation. ‘The Magnificat’ expresses the happiness that Mary experienced as a young girl. She a poor teenager from a forgotten village on the outskirts of the Empire pours out her joy because the Lord of heaven and earth looked down upon her in her lowliness.
Mary was a young girl like all the rest and lived the ordinary life of her village. And yet the Lord’s glance fell on her. She was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus. In turn she glances over us mercifully, especially on the downtrodden, the poor, the neglected ones, widows, sick and suffering and those who mourn over their lost and least ones. Because of her mercy towards us she takes the responsibility of protecting us, from the dangers of life, calamity, disasters, earthquakes and from the bites of poisonous snakes and so on.
Mother Mary’s overflowing mercy and compassion went out towards others.
M - Mary showed her mercy and love towards her cousin Elizabeth.
A - Awareness of the loss of her boy Jesus when he was lost in the Temple.
R - Readily went out to meet Jesus in His journey to Calvary.
Y - Yearning to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to the Word of God.
How can I imitate Mother Mary’s Mercy in my life?
- I can be merciful towards my sisters in the community when I am hurt.
- I can be merciful towards those students who are not able to study well.
- I can be merciful towards the working girl who works in the kitchen.
- I can be merciful and show my kindness towards the sister who works in the compound watering the coconut trees and etc.
- I can be merciful towards the beggars who come to the door begging for alms.
- I can be merciful when I travel in the bus, train or plane if need be to help someone with the luggage or help a mother carrying her child.
- I can show mercy to the staff and students when they are late to school.
- I can readily offer to help when an accident takes place in front of my eyes.
- I can show my willingness towards my parishioners when they need my help in preparing the liturgy. There are umpteen ways to show mercy, if only I have eyes to see, a heart to feel and hands to help.
Let us pray to Mary the Mother of Mercy to intercede for us and grant us the grace we need to practice the above works in our day today lives. Mother of Mercy, pray for us.
