Vijaymari Community College, Mangaluru
It was the dream of the then Provincial Superior, Sister Agatha Mary and the Educational Secretary, Sister M. Lydia to start a Community College for the drop outs and for the economically backward students. Sister M. Villa the then Principal and the staff took immense trouble to learn the needs of the students and the demand for jobs. There were requests from schools in North India to train students in K.G. Teachers’ Training so that they could employ the students in their schools. Sister Jayanthika and Sister Devina along with the Corporator Mrs. Hilda Alva, Kavoor visited the Industries at Baikampady to acquire firsthand knowledge. Finally they decided to introduce Pre Primary Teachers’ Training, Beauty & Health Care, Vermiculture, Fruits, Jasmine and Vegetable Cultivation.
On 15th October 2006 the Community College was inaugurated by Sister Agatha Mary the then Provincial Superior. It started with 93 students. The courses introduced were Diploma in Pre-Primary Education, Communicative English, Vermi Culture, and Jasmine cultivation, Embroidery, Fashion Designing and Beautician Course. The Students are trained in work culture. From the very inception the Students have been trained in work culture and they manage the kitchen gardens, cleanliness of the campus through daily group work. Through this experience they acquire skills for earning and the art of living.
Many young women have gone through the portals of Vijaymari Community College and have secured jobs in various Institutions and companies, as office assistants, stenos, craft and K.G. teachers, rendering service with efficiency and love which they themselves have received bountifully from the Institute. It’s a joy to know that our four tailoring students got together and started a Tailoring Centre on 3rd March 2017. Most of the women who are trained here are stitching at home at present and earning their livelihood.
