Carmel Vidya Vikas Kendra, Residential School for the Mentally Challenged Children, Bailhongal

Two A.C sisters set their foot in Nesaragi – Bailhongal in July 1999. The sisters came to study the region and noted that the mentally challenged children, adults and persons with other disabilities were neglected. On an experimental basis a small rented house was started for the mentally challenged students. Carmel Vidya Vikas Kendra was officially opened on 24th July 1999. When a place was found in Bailhongal, the school was shifted there in March 2005.

Carmel Vidya Vikas Kendra is a residential School for the Mentally Challenged. The School started with five students; gradually the number rose to 60. On 18th December 2003, Bishop Bernard Moras blessed and laid the foundation stone for a school and a home for the mentally and physically disabled, at Bailhongal. The inauguration and blessing of Carmel Nivas, was on 31st March 2005.

HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS:
• Top priority is given to prayer life and to learn to live in the present moment Important religious and National feasts are celebrated
• Catholic students are encouraged to attend daily Mass and prayers.
• Yoga and exercises are conducted, Art and Craft like paper vases, flowers, ear rings, beads – chains, and woolen garlands etc are prepared by students with the help of teachers.
• Individualized education is imparted after assessing each student
• Students have writing, drawing, singing, fancy dress and sports competitions.
• 14 students participated in the Sports conducted by the District Dept. of Women and Child Welfare and Youth Welfare Department at Belgaum and won prizes.
